Little Mix and Military Wives Choir set for tight Christmas No.1 battle
Published:Little Mix have only just come through a tough scrap with Marcus Collins for the right to be crowned X Factor champions and they now head into another tough clash – this time against the Military Wives Choir for the Christmas No.1 spot.
Despite their undoubted popularity, Little Mix remain second in the betting behind the Military Wives Choir who are currently 4/6 to claim the coveted No.1 spot.
The Military Wives Choir have been tutored by choirmaster Gareth Malone for a three-part BBC series and – with the likeable and charismatic Samantha Stevenson as their soloist – they will be tough to beat with their song Wherever You Are.
Little Mix haven’t exactly been helped by having to release a version of Damien Rice’s Cannonball as their debut single.
It’s a far cry from the urban-edged pop that many – including Gary Barlow – feel they should be recording and they are currently out at 13/8 to follow in the footsteps of Matt Cardle and make it consecutive years at Christmas No.1 for X factor winners.
Next in the betting is what must be one of the most unlikely charity singles of all time.
Nirvana are re-releasing Smells Like Teen Spirit with all the proceeds going to children’s charity Rhythmix – the charity previously embroiled in a legal battle with Simon Cowell about his attempts to copyright the name for the girl group who would later become Little Mix.
There is a precedent of unlikely songs usurping X Factor winners though, with Joe McElderry’s 2009 debut single The Climb being beaten to the Christmas top spot by Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name.
It’s hard to see it happening this year though and, with so much good will for both Little Mix and the Military Wives Choir, Nirvana will have their work cut out at 7/1.
