Favourite Phil Taylor worth backing to scoop 16th World Championship
Published:As the most successful darts player of all time, it is no surprise to see Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor installed as favourite to win the Ladbrokes.com World Championship, starting on December 15th.
Taylor has amassed a sensational fifteen World Championship titles in his reign of dominance, and for that reason the price of 1/1 for a sixteenth championship win still looks very generous.
Of his main contenders, the man he formerly mentored, Adrian Lewis, is 7/1 to achieve consecutive titles after winning the 2011 event.
Gary Anderson comes next in the betting at 8/1, but there looked to be a gulf in class between even a player of ‘The Flying Scotsman’s’ calibre and Taylor when they met in the Grand Slam final in November, where the Englishman crushed Anderson 16-4.
It is a testament to the stature and ability of the man that you can back Taylor at 1/1 vs the field at 4/5 in the Alexandra Palace competition.
Accepting of the fact that he is likely to be favourite for each tournament he competes in, at least for the foreseeable future, Taylor is still as hungry as ever for success, and particularly in the World Championships.
He recently told Sky Sports, “The World Championship’s the big one. I’ve got a couple of weeks now where I can prepare properly. I’m playing well enough – if I don’t win it this year then I want a kick up the backside.”
Fired-up from a premature exit at the hands of Welshman Mark Webster in last year’s World Championship, a Phil Taylor as determined as ever is a terrifying prospect for any opposition unlucky enough to come up against him at the tournament.
Odds as short as 1/1 for Taylor to be successful in the tournament still represent tremendous value for a player of such obvious quality and pedigree.
