Chelsea to move for Higuain as African Cup of Nations approaches
Published:With Nicolas Anelka set to join Shanghai Shenhua, and Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou away on international duty in January, Chelsea’s attacking options will be severely limited.
Only an out-of-form Fernando Torres, along with Daniel Sturridge, who has more often been employed in a wide role, will make up the forwards at Andre Villas-Boas’ disposal.
The Portuguese boss is reportedly set to change that though, with a move for Real Madrid’s lethal striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Still only 24, Higuain would fit the bill of the type of player Villas-Boas is looking to bring in to complement the fresh model of younger talent he wishes to build at Stamford Bridge.
Frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities of late, the Argentinian striker would likely welcome the interest from abroad, and could have a decision to make between Chelsea and oil-rich PSG as the French club have also declared an intention to sign the player.
As the 24-year-old averages over a goal every two games for both club and country, it is understandable that he would command a transfer fee in the region of £30million.
Whilst that shouldn’t prove a stumbling block for Roman Abramovich and Chelsea, their position could be strengthened by the proposed exit of Spanish striker Fernando Torres from the club.
Villas-Boas has lost patience in trying to persevere with a man who has hit only five goals in all competitions since a £50million switch last January, and looks set to cut his losses with a £20million deal.
The departure of Didier Drogba from the club is also being touted as a possibility, with Shanghai Shenhua eager to team him up with former strike partner Nicolas Anelka, and LA Galaxy also keen to bring him in as a marketing commodity to fill the void left by David Beckham’s imminent parting from the club.
