Carl Froch claims mental supremacy ahead of Ward clash

Carl Froch believes he has gained the psychological advantage over Andre Ward ahead of their Super Six World Classic tournament final on Saturday night.

The Nottingham-born fighter takes on Californian Ward in a battle not only to determine the Super Six winner, but with WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine super-middleweight titles on the line also.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Froch explained how he feels as though he has got under his opponent’s skin prior to their brawl at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

“I was quite surprised actually. He let his guard down mentally. He was very uptight and very rattled and there’s no need to be. I’ve spoken the truth from the start, pointed out a few flaws in his style and a few things he does a bit aggressively, a bit naughtily with his head.”

Froch looks to have planted seeds of doubt in the American, whilst also outlining the underhand tactics that he would want to see Ward punished for should he attempt to employ them during the bout.

In light of the controversy surrounding Amir Khan’s recent fight on American soil, Froch looks wise to draw attention to his opposing fighter’s past in-ring indiscretions.

It also appears smart of Froch, undoubtedly the less talented competitor in terms of actual boxing skills, to attempt to goad Ward into wanting to abandon his game-plan and brawl less tactically.

This would certainly suit the tough British fighter down to the ground, as his strong chin would likely to be able to withstand a barrage even at Ward’s lightning speed, and his inimitable brawling style would shine through against a man far more adept at tactical boxing.

The physical and mental preparation undertaken by Froch look as though they’ll stand him in good stead in Atlantic City, and the immense confidence that the English boxer exudes makes 5/2 look a good price for him to triumph over Ward.
