Sunderland vs Wigan: expect a tight affair between strugglers

Published:

All the managerial focus this week may have been on Andre Villas-Boas’ problems at Chelsea, but both the Wigan and Sunderland bosses have been under increasing pressure.

Roberto Martinez and Steve Bruce are 3/1 and 5/2 respectively to be the next Premier League boss sacked and defeat for either manager in this game would tighten the noose around their neck.

With so much at stake so early in the season, this looks set to be an extremely tense affair…

Match odds

Sunderland find themselves in the position of being the 8/11 favourites in this clash but have won just one of their Premier League games at the Stadium of Light this season.

Wigan ended a run of nine straight defeats with a 3-3 draw against Blackburn Rovers last weekend but it should have been so much more for the Latics who conceded an equaliser from the penalty spot in the ninth minute of injury-time.

They are 4/1 to get their first win since August this Saturday but a better punt may be to back the draw at a very tempting 5/2.

The Black Cats have drawn their previous three home games and, with defeat for either team being a huge blow, backing a tight game to finish level could lead to a very decent pay out.

Goal markets

There hasn’t been a goalless draw between these sides since they met in the Championship back in 2004.

However, with Wigan failing to score more than one goal away from home in the league this term and Sunderland not scoring in their previous two matches, backing under 2.5 goals looks worth serious consideration at 5/6.
