Ferrer can give Djokovic a rough ride at ATP World Tour Finals
Published:All the focus following David Ferrer’s victory over Andy Murray may have been the Scotsman’s groin injury, but the Spaniard deserves a lot of credit for his opening performance in London.
Ferrer was excellent for long periods of his 6-4, 7-5 win against the Scot and took full advantage of Murray’s 44 unforced errors throughout the match.
Ferrer now faces World No.1 Novak Djokovic in his second match and can be confident of pushing him all the way.
Djokovic ground out a three sets victory over Tomas Berdych on Monday evening and the Serb is not without his own injury worries.
Despite winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), Djokovic has struggled in recent weeks with a host of injuries, including Abdominal, back and shoulder problems and – after the way he exploited Murray’s weaknesses – Ferrer should not be discounted in this clash.
After winning two titles in 2011 and remaining solid throughout the year, Ferrer can be backed at 12/5 to come out on top and defeat Djokovic.
However, Djokovic has been incredible throughout 2011, winning three Grand Slam titles and climbing to the top of the world rankings.
Even with his injury he remains a formidable opponent and has by far the better record in matches between these players over recent years.
The Serb has won four of their previous five meetings and is currently a pretty decent 1/3 to win consecutive games in London.
If you like your odds a little longer though, backing Djokovic to win in three sets looks tempting at 11/4 – especially considering he’s already lost a set in this tournament and Ferrer appears in fine form.
