Chelsea vs Liverpool: Stamford Bridge set for tight battle

Published:

Kenny Dalglish has told Liverpool supporters not to expect a full-strength team for this clash, but don’t be surprised to see the Scot name a very strong side for their trip to Stamford Bridge.

The Reds are without a trophy since their 2006 FA Cup win and, with no Champions League and several teams better equipped for an assault on the Premier League, this represents one of their best chances of adding something to their large trophy cabinet.

The Blues looked far better in their win against Wolves at the weekend but will be without captain John Terry for this game through suspension.

There shouldn’t be too much to separate these two teams who are desperate for silverware…

Match odds

Chelsea are the 4/5 favourites going into this game but they have been far from impenetrable at the Bridge this season.

They have lost two of their lasts three games at home and have won only two of their five games this season against teams currently in the top half of the Premier League.

With Liverpool winning all three of their previous games against Liverpool, backing the Reds to win this clash at 7/2 is well worth consideration.

However, Chelsea’s two Carling Cup games this season have gone into extra-time, so backing this game to finish in a draw after 90 minutes is extremely tempting at 9/4.

Goal markets

There hasn’t been a goalless draw between these sides in their last 11 encounters and their meeting at the Bridge a week last Sunday saw the Reds come through 2-1.

Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 5/6, while ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is joint 4/1 favourite with Didier Drogba to score first.
