Chelsea linked with defender as Terry to begin Villas-Boas clearout
Published:Jamie Redknapp stated after Chelsea’s defeat at Liverpool that Andre Villas-Boas needs time to build his own squad and this could begin with the departure of John Terry.
Seven of the squad assembled by Jose Mourinho started for Chelsea against Liverpool and there are certainly reasons to believe that these players have become set in their ways and are struggling to adapt to Villas-Boas’ differing style.
One way of fixing this is overhauling the squad and allowing Villas-Boas to bring in the players that he feels will most suit the style of football he wants to play.
This will potentially mean some high-profile names leaving Stamford Bridge, with Terry and Nicolas Anelka two of the names linked with the exit door.
Terry has faced some problems this season, arguably not having the same impact on the field as days gone by and also becoming embroiled in claims of racism off of it.
With his influence waning, Villas-Boas may decide that the end of the season is the best time to cash in on the defender while he does have some time at the top left in his career.
Vinnie Jones has also told the BBC that he would not be surprised to see Terry heading elsewhere in the near future.
With Alex also seemingly out of favour with Villas-Boas, it would be no surprise to see a defender arrive in January and Bolton’s Gary Cahill reportedly heads the shopping list.
Cahill would surely jump at the chance of such a move given Bolton’s relegation fears and he has formed a solid partnership with Terry when the pair have been selected for England.
A move to Chelsea and becoming a regular in their first team would also provide a massive boost to Cahill’s inclusion in England’s Euro 2012 squad, where at present he is one of a handful of players on the borderline of being named in Fabio Capello’s 23.
Chelsea’s odds are currently 14/ to win the Premier League, while three defeats in four games have seen them drift to an enticing 1/4 just to finish in the top four this season.
