Carling Cup: Arsenal favourites to condemn Bolton to more misery

Published:

The Carling Cup fourth round kicks off on Tuesday with a host of intriguing ties.

While Manchester United’s trip to League Two side Aldershot should result in a comfortable win for the reigning Premier League champions, the other three games promise to be a lot closer…

Arsenal vs Bolton

Last season’s finalists head into this game on the back of a very decent couple of weeks.

They have won six of their previous seven games in all competitions and face a Bolton side who have picked up just six points from their opening nine Premier League matches.

The Gunners are 8/15 favourites for this clash and, with Bolton not winning at Arsenal since an FA Cup tie in 1994, they should come out on top.

Bolton are out at 5/1 to win, while the draw can be backed at 3/1. However, a Trotters game hasn’t finished level in any competition since a 1-1 draw with Newcastle back in February.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

The Eagles are flying high in the Championship following a run of four wins and a draw in their previous five.

However, they head into this game at Selhurst Park as 2/1 outsiders against the Championship’s top team who are 13/10 to progress in 90 minutes.

The Saints haven’t won on the road in their previous four games though and, with Palace losing just one of their last ten home games, Dougie Freedman’s men could be worth backing.

Cardiff vs Burnley

Another Championship match-up sees Burnley travel to Cardiff.

The sides have already met once this season with their league game at Turf Moor finishing 1-1.

In fact, all the previous three meetings between the teams have finished 1-1 and the same score can be backed at 11/2 for this clash.

Cardiff are the 1/1 favourites though and haven’t lost a game at the Cardiff City Stadium since August, while Burnley are out at 11/4 to get the victory.
