US Open accumulator: Roddick at risk in our 28/1 selection

Published:

After getting six out of eight legs of Saturday’s accumulator right, it’s time to put faith in a smaller sample on Sunday, picking out two handsomely-priced male and female players that should shine in New York…

Donald Young vs Juan Ignacio Chela

Home advantage has to be the reason that Young is favoured against Chela, who has yet to drop a set, reached the last eight in 2007 and won his prior collision with Young on a hard court in the USA last year. Young has never been further than this in a Grand Slam.

Andy Roddick vs Julien Benneteau

A-Rod has flopped at this stage or earlier in four of his last seven majors, including the last two US Opens. Benneteau has toppled him on a US hard court once before and has impressively dispatched of Nicolas Almagro and Denis Istomin in straight sets already.

Monica Niculescu vs Angelique Kerber

This is the one women’s last 16 clash between two non-seeds, and as such one of the most open. Niculescu has delivered easily her best ever Grand Slam showing and, having won her previous meeting with Kerber and not yet dropped a set, can defy the odds again.

Shuai Peng vs Flavia Pennetta

Both Peng and Pennetta have had fine tournaments, which is why the margins in the betting are so slim. However, the Italian’s 4-0 head-to-head edge over her opponent can’t be ignored, especially as two of those victories were achieved at Flushing Meadows.

Our four-fold accumulator returns £146.55 for a £5 stake.
