The Safety Net: Del Potro to keep Argentina alive in Davis Cup

Published:

If Argentina have any aspirations of winning their Davis Cup tie with defending champions Serbia then they must win their singles rubbers with Janko Tipsarevic and we believe that Juan Martin del Potro will do this today as the safety net bet.

With Serbia having world number one and treble 2011 Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in their ranks, it is hard not to think that they are guaranteed two victories in the best-of-five team event.

Therefore, the pressure is on Del Potro and David Nalbandian to beat the other Serbian singles star Tipsarevic, while Argentina must also find a way of triumphing in the sole doubles rubber.

The first round of singles rubbers pits Del Potro against Tipsarevic and the Argentine has won both previous meetings between the duo.

And crucially both of these victories have come on hard courts, which is the same surface as the Davis Cup clash and in convincing fashion in straight sets.

What is also worth considering is that the latest of these victories was earlier this year and it was another big occasion, as it was final of the ATP Tour event in Delray Beach in the US.

Tipsarevic progressed the furthest of the duo at the recent US Open, but this means that Del Potro is likely to now be the fresher player, while there are doubts as to whether the Serbian is fully fit after he was forced to retire injured during the fourth set of his quarter final with Djokovic.

Del Potro is 1/2 in the Davis Cup tennis odds to beat Tipsarevic and so we wlll be staking £40 on this outcome to fulfil our aim of making £20 each day.
