Medicean Man can land the feature as Doncaster opens Leger Festival

The Ladbrokes St Leger may be the race that’s dominating the headlines but canny punters will be eagerly awaiting the opening race of the St Leger Festival meeting today.

Over the next four days, Doncaster racecourse will play host to 28 races and there is plenty of value to be found, and plenty of profit to be made, in what promises to be some top quality racing.

Channel 4 will be screening four races a day from tomorrow onwards but today’s feature race, the 15:10 Scarborough Stakes, pits some very talented sprinters against each other and in Medicean Man, punters have a horse to get excited about.

The progressive five-year-old has already delighted punters twice this season and was unlucky not to make it a hat-trick at Ascot last time out.

Richard Hughes takes the ride aboard Medicean Man today and his tactics are likely to be spot on with a horse that can up the gears as the race enters the final furlongs.

Medicean Man is likely to start the Scarborough Stakes as favourite – he’s currently trading at 7/2 – and on his first foray into Listed company can prove his class.

The best of the rest looks to be Duchess Dora who looks a big each way price at 6/1.

The Leger Legends race at 15:45 pits some of the biggest names from the world of horse racing against each other and while it offers the racegoers a chance to cheer on their favourite names, you can guarantee each and every jockey will not want to lose.

Charlie Swan won it last year and he rides Skyfire (10/1), but the betting suggests Invincible Hero, ridden by Julie Krone, and Talent Scout, ridden by Tom O’Ryan, are the horses to beat as they both share favouritism at 5/1.

It’s a race where it’s worth favouring the jockey over the horse and for that reason, Kevin Darley and Tribal Myth look one of the better bets at 10/1.
