Leeds Utd v Man Utd: Bitter rivals to renew hostilities

Published:

You probably won’t need reminding of the last time these sides met but, for those of you with short memories, Leeds United shocked Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup two years ago.

Jermaine Beckford got the only goal in that game at Old Trafford, but this clash promises plenty more in terms of attacking threat and excitement.

With Sir Alex Ferguson’s side out for revenge in front of a passionate Elland Road crowd, this should be well worth watching…

Match odds

This will be the fifth time these sides have met in the League Cup and Man Utd have won all four of their previous encounters.

The Manchester side have also won all five of their Premier League games this season while Leeds currently sit in 11th place in the Championship after opening with two defeats.

They’ve picked up in recent weeks and have won their last two games, but Crystal Palace and Bristol City aren’t exactly Man Utd.

With players like Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick set to start and push for a regular place in Ferguson’s starting XI, Leeds will struggle to get anything out of this.

Back Man Utd to win at a very tempting 1/2.

Goal markets

With Man Utd scoring 21 goals in their opening five league games and Leeds hitting 14 in their previous six, goals look guaranteed.

When you take into account that Simon Grayon’s men haven’t kept a single clean sheet in their previous 12 competitive games, backing over 3.5 goals looks as great punt at 6/5.

Meanwhile, with Owen set to start his first game of the season, backing the striker to score against Leeds is also tempting.

Owen has scored four goals in five Carling Cup appearances for Man Utd, including one in the final back in 2010.

Owen is 6/5 to score at any time against Leeds.
