A return to form for Woods would not reignite his challenge to regain his position as the number-one ranked golfer in the world, but also boost his chances of making the USA team for the 2012 Ryder Cup.
Davis Love III captain’s the American team at Medinah and knows that an on-song Woods would significantly enhance the chances of a USA victory on home soil.
USA are 1/1 in the Ryder Cup odds to win the team event on their own patch, with Europe the same price to triumph for the fifth time in six renewals.
If Europe are to be successful, then Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are likely going to need to play well and the English duo will also be the target of many questions in 2012.
Both are still waiting to win a first major despite their lengthy time in the upper echelons of the game and Donald in particular will be disappointed not to have triumphed given the consistency of his game in 2011.
Rory McIlroy will be another pivotal member of the European team and he will be keen to add to his major collection after winning the 2011 US Open.
