The question marks over his ability were vast after Charlton’s spectacularly dismal end to the 2010-11 campaign, however rookie boss Chris Powell has started to prove his worth now after a summer in which he made a staggering 18 signings.
Those newcomers have gelled with incomprehensible speed to claim four victories in their first five games and inspire hope that the Addicks could finally exit the third tier at the third attempt, as they are rated 4/1 joint-favourites for the title.
Charlton topped the table in August in both of the previous seasons before falling away though so supporters will remain grounded, and there are few greater tests of a team’s promotion pedigree at this level than a clash with Sheffield Wednesday.
Gary Megson has done all his power to downplay expectations at Hillsborough, saying in pre-season that “the squad isn’t a second-favourite squad at all”, something Ladbrokes are in agreement with given odds of 6/1 on them finishing first.
His side have won their first three home matches and lost their first two on the road, and having returned from their last two trips to The Valley empty-handed, a price of evens on that trend continuing looks mighty tempting.
Other markets
Sheffield Wednesday aren’t the defensively solid unit that you might expect of a Megson outfit and have leaked seven times in their last four league fixtures, so with Charlton netting twice or more in every outing so far, over 2.5 goals leaps out at 8/11.
2-1 has been the magic scoreline on three occasions already this campaign for the hosts, so with the Owls losing out by that margin at Bury recently, odds of 7/1 on a repeat are well worth considering.
