Argentina win sets up brilliant Scotland and England clash
Published:Argentina’s thrilling 13-12 win against Scotland means the Scots must now beat England in their final Pool B game if they are to qualify for the knockout stages.
Scotland looked in control for much of the game against the South Americans, before Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino scored a late try which was converted to put Argentina in front.
Dan Parks had a late chance to snatch a win for Scotland but his drop goal attempt was sliced wide in wet conditions.
Scotland are now 1/16 to be eliminated in the Pool stages for the first time in their World Cup history – although skipper Rory Lawson still believes his side can progress.
“We know each other pretty well and we’ve waited for this for a long time. Ultimately it was always going to be small margins and Amorosino took his try exceptionally well,” he said.
“It was always going to be about controlling territory and possession and they maybe just won that contest.
“We played in the right areas and obviously it was not a night to throw the ball around. We played with tempo and a good bit of control but ultimately we didn’t do enough.
“We’ve got a six-day turnaround so we’ll go and have a look at the game but we’ve got to put in a big performance in Auckland to give us a chance of progressing.”
Scotland are currently 7/1 to be knocked out at the quarter final stage and must get their first win against England since 2008 to even get that far.
