Wenger backed to be next boss to go after Arsenal drubbing

Arsene Wenger has been heavily backed to be the next Premier League manager to leave their post following Arsenal’s humiliating drubbing at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

Numerous bets were placed on Wenger stepping down at Arsenal during the second half of their 8-2 hammering at Old Trafford, with the Frenchman now 4/1 from 9/1 to be the next boss to go.

However, Wenger has vowed to fight on and believes that ‘special circumstances’ played a role in the loss, which has left Arsenal on one point through three games and sitting in 17th spot in the Premier League standings.

The defeat was Arsenal’s worst since 1896.

Part of Wenger’s excuse is that his injury and suspension-hit squad had not fully recovered from their midweek exploits when qualifying for the Champions League group stages in Udinese.

He added: “We were short in several areas, that’s for sure. We had eight players out, but United had class and they punished us. When we finished with ten men, we were exhausted.

“We have too many players who missed this game. Yes, we do not have the squad to compete with so many players out, but at the moment we have not found the solution to our problem from the outside.”

Wenger must take his fair share of the blame for Arsenal’s lack of squad depth, failing to get busy in the transfer market this summer, despite selling Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas.

With the Arsenal fans potentially turning, Wenger must make a statement before the end of the transfer window and there is a chance that three or four new faces could arrive.
