Tottenham Hotspur are still a big threat, insists Crouch
Published:Peter Crouch is convinced Tottenham Hotspur have what it takes to get back into the Champions League – despite a lack of signings this summer.
Despite constant rumours of big-money signings, Spurs have only added 40-year-old Brad Friedel to their ranks and the gap between them and the top four looks to be widening.
However, Spurs are now chasing FC Twente striker Bryan Ruiz, with the Costa Rican confirming the North London club have been in contact with his agent.
Spurs certainly need to add a goalscorer to their ranks – last season they had only the eighth best attack in the Premier League, with Crouch and Jermain Defoe contributing just eight goals between them.
However, Crouch insists there is more than enough quality at White Hart Lane with or without Ruiz.
He said: “It’s amazing when you look at what the other teams around us have spent. It’s a hell of a lot of money.
“I look round our dressing room, though, and there are a lot of players who I wouldn’t swap for theirs.
“I still believe that we have more than enough ability. We have no one who is going to have to settle into the side, we have played together before.
“I still believe this could be a really big season for us. I think the aim has to be to get into the top four. It is going to be difficult […] but I would still put ourselves right up there with a chance.”
Tottenham are currently 11/4 to finish in the top four and much will depend on how the new-look Liverpool side perform and whether Arsenal add any new defenders to their squad.
It will be a hugely difficult task for Spurs to get back in the top four but, without the distraction of Champions League football (Spurs won just one of their last four post-European games) they could be well worth a punt to make it back to the Promised Land.
