The Weekly Accumulator: Monfils & Fish to star on US Open first day

Published:

The final tennis grand slam of the season gets underway today and although none of biggest names are in action in the men’s draw of the US Open, we have found a 75/1 accumulator to begin the tournament.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray all have to wait to begin at Flushing Meadows, leaving Gael Monfils, Tomas Berdych and home favourite Mardy Fish to star in the opening day’s action.

Hurricane Irene has passed, leaving only minimal damage behind and Fish will be banking on the home support to help him past Tobias Kamke.

In his hard-court preparations ahead of the US Open, Fish reached three finals and a semi final and the world number eight should follow up by beating his German opponent.

Monfils faces a potential banana skin against the highly-regarded Grigor Dimitrov, while fresh off his victory over Federer in Cincinnati, Berdych should have little trouble beating little-known French qualifier Romain Jouan.

Of the expected closer matches, Michael Yani holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Bernard Tomic, while the young Australian also appears to have been suffering from fatigue in recent weeks after a tough season.

In front of his home fans, Yani can spring a surprise.
