The Safety Net: Brilliant Brazilian to stretch unbeaten streak
Betting on football friendlies paid off on Friday with Manchester United dominating the New York Cosmos in Paul Scholes’ testimonial, but our Safety Net thoughts return to tennis today.
Scholes’ Manchester United side took the Safety Net bank up to £479 offering us plenty of leeway as we search for our £20 target banker each day.
With the world’s best in Montreal for the Rogers Cup this week, we are bound to find some very short favourites across the opening few rounds and Juan Martin del Potro appeals at 1/9 to beat Jarkko Nieminen.
The likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer are not in action until later in the week so we’ve had to look a little harder for the Saftey Net bet and while Del Potro appeals, it’s the Brazilian Thomaz Belluci who we like the look of.
We’d love to tip up Radek Stepanek at 10/11 to beat Felciano Lopez – a ridiculous price considering Stepanek’s 8-1 head-to-head record and the fact he won in Washington last week – but the Czech picked up an injury in the final and we’re not sure how it’s affected him.
Instead Belluci takes on Kazakhstani Andrey Golubev later this evening and is 4/11 to advance into the second round.
The two have met three times before and while they have all been on clay, Bellucci has emerged victorious in all three encounters.
Golubev’s only hard court tournament since the end of the clay court season was in a Challenger Tour event in his home country where he lost to a guy ranked 210 in the world.
Golubev has suffered a first round defeat in 17 of his 22 tournaments this year and while the hard court isn’t Bellucci’s favoured surface, the world number 36 should have enough to over come the world number 91 today.
To make out £20 target we’re staking £55 on Bellucci beating Golubev today.
Today’s stake: £55
Best case scenario: £499
Worst case scenario: £424
Last Safety Net bet: Manchester United beat New York Cosmos at 1/7
Wealth warning: although we are confident the safety net bet’s strategy will be profitable over a period of time, the nature of sport means we cannot guarantee you will win every single time.
