The Safety Net: Berdych can better Monaco in Cincinnati
Published:Andy Roddick may have suffered a shock exit yesterday and Andy Murray and Roger Federer could be on the end of shock upsets over the coming days, but Tomas Berdych should have no troubles later today.
Murray has been handed a tough opening round match with David Nalbandian while the tie of the second round is easily Federer’s clash with Juan Martin del Potro, but Berdych has been handed a much easier draw.
Juan Monaco may be the world number 39 but he has never beaten Berdych, the world number nine, in any of their five head-to-head matches.
Two of the five clashes took place on a hard court, including a match-up in the 2008 Australian Open which Berdych won in four sets.
The other match-up came in a 2009 Davis Cup tie and the two have never met on a hard court in an ATP Tour event, but Berdych has beaten Monaco twice on the ATP Tour this year, both wins coming on clay.
Last week in Montreal Monaco suffered a first round exit to Ivo Karlovic who then went on to lose in straight sets to Berdych in the second round.
Based on the Karlovic form, coupled with two wins over his opponent this year, we think Berdych can boster the Safety Net bank at 1/4.
