Redknapp wants to resurrect career of Liverpool letdown

Tottenham’s signing of Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid is a done deal according to reports in Spain, but Harry Redknapp is considering turning to Liverpool to sign another midfielder before the end of the transfer window.

However, the 12m capture of Diarra has virtually emptied the Tottenham transfer kitty, meaning that any new faces will have to be on loan deals, unless players leave the club.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been one named linked from Manchester City, although it is being reported that Redknapp is also keen to join forces again with Joe Cole.

Cole has suffered a nightmare 13 months at Liverpool, being sent off on his Premier League debut against Arsenal and then slipping so far out of favour that he was selected for a Lancashire Senior Cup outing.

First-team opportunities have been no more forthcoming at the start of this season, as he has not even made the bench in any of Liverpool’s Premier League or Carling Cup fixtures so far.

So a move elsewhere away from Liverpool may be his best hope of reviving his flailing career and it is likely that the 29-year-old would welcome the chance to work again with his former manager from West Ham.

Redknapp said: “I wouldn’t say to you that I wouldn’t sign him, because I’d be lying. I’d love the chance to work with him again.

“I signed him when he was 11 at West Ham. I watched him grow up. He was the best young footballer I’ve ever seen. Could I get him back to where he was? I think so, yeah.”

Spurs and Liverpool are both clubs with aspirations for the season and will both feel they have the squads capable of mounting a challenge to finish in the top four in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s odds are currently 8/11 to finish in the top four, with Tottenham 5/2.
