Pick of the Pundits: York to be hit by Wild Coco in the Galtres Stakes

Published:

The pundits were absolutely spot on yesterday with their selection of Sea Moon, and today it looks like they’ve found a winner in Wild Coco.

The short 15/8 favourite is one of the stars of the second day at York’s Ebor Festival, and after seeing two fancied runners lose yesterday, the punters are hoping Wild Coco is the real deal.

Kevin Walsh of the Irish Post, Fleur Cushman of the Weekender and The Guardian are all in the Wild Coco camp today but the race doesn’t hold a great record for favourites.

The EBF ‘Selkirk’ Galtres Stakes has been won by just two winning favourites – one was a joint favourite – in the last 10 years.

Last year Brushing won at a huge 20/1 and along with Inchiri in 2001, they are the only two horses to have won at odds bigger than 6/1 in the last 10 years.

So, while it’s not a race for the favourites it is a race for fancied horses and any horses that come in for a lot of support in the betting are to be looked at.

Mirror Lake opened this morning at 11/1 and is now 7/1, if that is to come in further before the race starts then she is certainly worth a look.

However, Wild Coco is still the one to beat and if she runs to her potential, then this race is there for the taking.

She disappointed at Glorious Goodwood when finishing fifth despite being sent off as the favourite, however that was over a 1m6f trip and on ground which may not be preferred by the three-year-old.

Wild Coco is worth watching today but Mirror Lake looks the best each-way bet and if she shortens punters may be on to a winner.
