Liverpool ready to rival Arsenal for signing of Wolves striker
Published:Arsenal may be desperate for new signings at the moment but last week’s link with Kevin Doyle seemed a bit far-fetched.
However Liverpool’s link with the Wolverhampton Wanderers striker this morning suggests Doyle is starting to win the admiration of the Premier League’s top managers and we could see a battle between Arsenal and Liverpool for the striker’s signature as the transfer window draws to a close.
Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli is a big fan of Doyle and was keen to bring the Republic Of Ireland international to Tottenham Hotspur during his time at White Hart Lane.
It seems his influence is rubbing off on Kenny Dalglish who asked his scouts to asses Doyle’s performance in Wolves match with Fulham at the weekend, and Doyle impressed despite missing an open goal early in the match.
Having missed out on Shane Long earlier this summer, Dalglish is keen to reinforce his front line and it seems Long’s international teammate has been earmarked for a role at Liverpool.
Outside of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, Dalglish has just David N’Gog to call on as back up and while Dirk Kuyt can fill in up front, Liverpool are short of another striker.
It has been suggested that £10m will be enough to lure Doyle away from Molineux, and as Liverpool chase a fourth place finish, it could well be £10m well spent.
Having secured a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday, Liverpool are now 4/5 to finish in the top four come the end of the season.
Arsenal are out to 11/10 to finish in the top four and with the current uncertainty that surrounds the club, they may not want to turn their noses up at Doyle.
It wouldn’t be the marquee signing that the Arsenal fans want, but with £30m from the Fabregas transfer and a possible £20m from the Nasri transfer, Wenger has a big enough budget to take Doyle to the Emirates.
