League One preview: The Best Bet in the race for the title
No pre-season favourite has won League One in the past 17 seasons, which does not bode well for Huddersfield as they look to make it third time lucky in the division after losing in the play-offs in the last two years.
League One is perhaps the most open of the Football League divisions, with seven or eight teams looking capable before the big kick-off of laying down a challenge.
However, looking at the top 13 teams in the League One betting to win the title, ten have drifted in the past few days.
The only three that have not weakened are Huddersfield, who have remained steady as 5/1 favourites, and Brentford and Chesterfield.
Brentford have been backed from 20/1 into 16/1 and the managerial appointment of Uwe Rosler is expected to have a positive influence.
Rosler has enjoyed a solid pre-season, which includes a 1-0 victory against a Stoke side that was close to full strength.
Brentford have finished in mid-table in the past two League One seasons and now may be ready to take the next step to become serious promotion contenders.
The return to fitness of Charlie MacDonald will be a massive plus and the partnership he builds with recent recruit Clayton Donaldson, who was League Two’s top scorer last season at Crewe, could determine their campaign.
After cantering to the League Two last season thanks primarily to their home form, Chesterfield are widely expected to challenge for back-to-back promotions.
Chesterfield have been cut in the League One odds from 25/1 to 20/1, but the loss of last season’s top scorer Craig Davies to Championship club Barnsley is a big blow.
However, with former Tottenham star Rohan Ricketts potentially signing after a successful trial, he could prove an able deputy.
Sheffield Wednesday (7/1), Charlton (8/1) and Sheffield United (10/1) are other clubs who may be largely fancied to win League One.
