Chelsea set to splash the cash on Modric and Mata

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is preparing to spend some serious cash as his club looks to oust Manchester United from the Premier League pinnacle.

According to the Daily Mail, the Blues are ready to spend in the region of £60million to secure the services of Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric and Valencia winger Juan Mata.

Spurs have already turned down a bid of £22million for the Croatian and Chelsea are expected to return within the coming days with an improved offer of £27million plus £2million in add-ons.

Chelsea boss Andres Villas-Boas said: “The only thing I can say is just that it can happen. I don’t know to what extent we can go regarding his price because we are speaking about a high amount and nothing else, basically. End of story.

“It depends on a lot of things. It depends on Chelsea’s decision – if they are willing to go forward or not; up to which value and to decide whether they want to keep the interest in the player. It doesn’t depend on me. It’s not my money!

“Luka, on this particular occasion, is a young player but there would be for sure a sensible price to pay.”

The details on Mata are a lot vaguer, although the Daily Mail assures us the Blues are determined to bag the player. We’ll see…

Chelsea kicked off their Premier League campaign with a less than inspiring goalless draw away to Stoke and the injection of new talent – particularly in the middle of the park – looks essential if the Blues are to regain the Premier League title, let alone challenge in Europe.

The addition of Modric would certainly boost Chelsea’s title credentials and make the 3/1 offered for them to win the league look a lot more tempting.
