Chelsea set to offer Tottenham Benayoun and Kalou for Modric

Chelsea’s summer-long pursuit of Luka Modic will come to come to a head this week with the Blues offering Yossi Benayoun, Salomon Kalou and £27million for the unsettled midfielder.

The Guardian is reporting Chelsea are reluctant to spend over £30million on the playmaker and are convinced the players plus cash deal will tempt Spurs to part with Modric.

However, the Blues will have their work cut out to prise the Croatian away from White Hart Lane, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy repeatedly saying the 25-year-old is not for sale at any price.

There’s no doubt that losing Modric would be a big blow to Spurs’ hopes of making it back into the Champions League.

He was hugely influential last season and, while Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart got all the headlines, he was consistently brilliant for the North London club.

Spurs are currently fifth favourites at 11/4 to finish in the top four but those odds would surely lengthen if Modric made his way west.

It’s not been a brilliant summer for Spurs who have failed to add to their attacking options that didn’t even begin to fire last season.

So, regardless of whether Modric leaves or not, backing the Arsenal (5/6) or Liverpool (1/1) to finish in the top four looks worth considering.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are also thought to be keeping an eye on Liverpool’s Raul Meireles.

Despite impressing last season, the Portuguese looks surplus to requirements at Anfield following Kenny Dalglish’s summer of midfield spending.
