Bolton raid Man City to bring in defender to possibly replace Cahill

Owen Coyle stated after Bolton’s Carling Cup success over Macclesfield that he expected to see new signings at the Reebok before the end of the transfer window and one of these could be Dedryck Boyata.

The Manchester City defender is in relatively high demand in the Premier League after a set of impressive performances last season when called upon, but his chances are likely to be limited during the current campaign.

Therefore, it may pay for the Belgian youngster to spend some time out on loan to garner further experience and benefit from regular football.

This is something that Coyle is prepared to offer at Bolton, while the short commute from Manchester would also be a positive for Boyata.

However, the one sticking point at present appears to be the length of such a loan deal, with Bolton keen to keep Boyata for the remainder of the season.

But Manchester City would rather agree to a shorter period, particularly as their options at centre-back have already been limited by Jerome Boateng’s move to Bayern Munich and Kolo Toure’s six-month ban still to be completed for failing a drugs test.

Once this difference has been resolved then there should be little problem agreeing a fee and terms.

The acquisition could also be important for Bolton if Gary Cahill leaves for Arsenal, although they may alternatively sign Phil Jagielka or Christopher Samba.

Everton and Blackburn have also been reportedly interested in taking Boyata on loan, but Bolton is now believed to be his preferred destination, although this is a U-turn on comments made by his father earlier this summer.

It is unlikely that Boyata will be in or Cahill will be out ahead of Bolton’s next encounter away to Liverpool, with Coyle’s men 7/1 in the Premier League odds to leave Anfield with three points.
