Andy Murray has pedigree to win hat-tick of Rogers Cup titles
Published:Andy Murray returns to a happy hunting ground this week as he looks to bag a hat-trick of Rogers Cup victories.
The Scotsman has won the event for the past two years and, with an opening game against World No.35 Kevin Anderson, he should have no problems getting into an early rhythm.
Murray is huge 1/12 favourite to win that clash, while Anderson is out at 6/1 to provide an opening shock.
However, Murray is looking further ahead than his first game and is hoping to become the first player since Ivan Lendl in 1989 to win three consecutive Rogers Cup titles and overtake Roger Federer in the world rankings.
Murray said: “It’s closer [at the top of the world rankings] now. I’ve had good results this year, especially in the Grand Slams, and if I win here and do well at the U.S. Open, which I didn’t do last year, then I have a shot as passing Federer.”
“Nadal was chasing Federer for three or four years and it took Djokovic four or five years.
“I get ready for this tournament by practising in Florida where it’s hot and humid and that gives me an edge over players who come here from Europe where it’s cold.”
Murray is currently third favourite to win the tournament at 5/1 behind Rafa Nadal at 5/2 and Novak Djokovic at 6/4.
After defeating both Nadal and Federer on his way to victory last year though, Murray should have no fear and may prove to be a very shrewd bet at a tempting 5/1.
