Pick of the Pundits: Pundits fishing for a win at Lingfield later

Published:

So Dark Promise failed to justify his 16 naps in yesterday’s Racing Post naps competiton but there was good news for readers of this column as Law Of The Range won well at 5/1.

Almost a third of the 50 racing writers were on Dark Promise yesterday, meaning the results table looks a little weak today.

There were 10 winners for the tipsters yesterday and Trading Post of the Racing Post managed to climb off the bottom of the table thanks to Law Of The Range.

With six meetings across Britain and Ireland today there is plenty of choice for the tipsters and they have made the most of it with very few horses being napped more than once.

One of those horses that does have support is Piranha in the 4.00 at Lingfield.

16:00 Lingfield: Piranha – 5/6

Ed Dunlop and Wiliam Buick team up with Piranha for this tricky Class 5 nursery handicap on the all-weather course, but there has been market support for the two-year-old already this morning following the withdrawal of Multi Blessing.

A win in a Class 5 maiden at Kempton 16 days ago is the reason behind the support for Piranha and while today’s race boasts a classier field, there should be no reason why Piranha can’t progress from that Kempton run.

Dark Ages looks the main danger but she will be making her first start on the dirt and while her trainer Noel Quinlan knows exactly what is needed to train a winner on the all-weather, Piranha’s experience of the dirt makes her a better bet.

Powerful Wind looks the pick of the outsiders at 11/1 because like Piranha, he upset Banksy on the all-weather at Kempton and while that race was weaker than Piranha’s three days later, Powerful Wind was an impressive winner at 33/1.

He’s since finished 5 of 6 in listed company at Sandown and the step back to Class 5 may be just what Powerful Wind needs to register a second career win.

Verdict: The odds-on for Piranha is a little off-putting so get on Powerful Wind each-way at 11/1.
