Liverpool sacrifice youngsters to finally land Adam

Liverpool continue to spend in their quest to break back into the top four of the Premier League this season as they have now agreed a fee with Blackpool for Charlie Adam.

Despite Adam’s best efforts, which included 12 goals from midfield, last season, Blackpool were still relegated from the Premier League on the final day when losing at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

This effectively confirmed that Adam would leave in the summer, after Blackpool had done well to repel the advances of Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Liverpool’s persistence now appears to have paid off, with Blackpool believed to have accepted an offer of £9m plus two young players on loan for the season.

Passing a medical is now all that is preventing Adam making the switch to Anfield and the deal should be completed inside the next 24 hours.

Liverpool will certainly not be short of options in central midfield this season following the £20m arrival of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Raul Meireles all also battling for a starting spot.

The finalisation of this deal should also allow Liverpool to dedicate all of their resources towards landing their other chief summer transfer target Stewart Downing from Aston Villa.

Liverpool have already had a £15m bid rejected for the England winger and may return with a second offer, which could include either Joe Cole or David N’Gog in part exchange.

It is still 1/1 in the Premier League odds that Liverpool regain their spot in the top four next season after a two-year hiatus, while they are 10/1 to win the title.

Liverpool begin their season against Henderson’s former club Sunderland and both he and Adam are likely to be in the squad for the clash, with Kenny Dalglish’s team 2/7 to open up with a victory.
