Liverpool ready to hijack Manchester City’s bid for Savic

It seems pre-season training has put Roberto Mancini in the mood to splash some cash.

Gael Clichy’s arrival at Eastland was announced last night and the former Arsenal player endeared himself to the Manchester City faithful while irritating the Manchester United faithful with what has become standard practice for new arrivals at the City of Manchester stadium.

“The people who live in Manchester are the true fans,” said Clichy. “They are from City, I won’t be bothered by United fans.”

You can be sure Manchester United fans will be ready to bother Clichy at every opportunity following those comments but the player is preparing for a successful spell at Manchester City and Clichy will not be the only defender arriving at Eastlands.

Partizan Belgrade defender Stefan Savic has arrived in England ahead of a medical with Manchester City and the 20-year-old impressed in a Partizan defence that kept 22 clean sheets in 48 games last season.

However Liverpool are making a last gasp effort to snatch the defender from Mancini’s grasp despite Savic setting his sights on a move to Eastlands.

The efforts of Dalglish look set to be in vein with Savic fully committed to a move to Manchester City.

The Montenegrin defender was on trial at Arsenal last season but a transfer never materialised and Savic joined Partizan at the start of last season.

He made his debut for Montenegro in August 2010 and has made six caps for his country as they continue to impress in England’s 2012 European Championships qualifying group.

The youngster will be an exciting addition to Manchester City’s squad and he transfer fee is believed to be in the region of £7m, the same price Manchester City paid Arsenal for Clichy.

Five years Clichy’s junior, the deal for Savic looks to be the better move by Mancini for the long term but next season Savic will be taking lessons from Vincent Kompany, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott and Dedryck Boyata.

It won’t be long until the youngster is knocking down Mancini’s door for a regular starting spot and Manchester City fans should get excited about their newest recruit.
