Host of names linked as Man United target one more signing

Sir Alex Ferguson will not be happy with David Gill this morning after the Manchester United chief executive backtracked on the Scot’s comments on Monday.

Ferguson and his squad are currently on tour in America where they are to face an MLS All Stars team including David Beckham and Thierry Henry on Thursday and new recruits David De Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones are all expected to play a part.

The full Manchester United squad is now in America and following Ferguson’s comments on Monday which suggested that the club’s summer spending had come to an end, this squad was expected to be the squad to start the new Premier League season.

Except Gill has contradicted his manager by claiming the club remain in the market for one “world-class player”.

Deals for Wesley Sneijder and Samir Nasri have never evolved and while Daniele De Rossi has been linked to the club, it is understood that no formal approach has been made for the Roma midfielder.

“We’re looking at one more player to bring in. Nothing’s happening – nothing imminent – on that at the moment, but we’ll see what happens when we get home [from the tour of America],” said Gill.

“We’ve been looking at a particular position and two or three players in that position, but nothing’s imminent at the moment.

“The important thing to understand, and Alex has made it clear, is that we need someone who’s going to improve the quality of the squad.”

Manchester City’s signing of Sergio Aguero today may be the reason for Gill suggesting Manchester United are in the market for one more player but deals for Sneijder and Nasri seem unrealistic.

However Gill’s comments mean the Paul Scholes replacement transfer saga has been reopened and we can expect to hear more rumour and hearsay over the next month.
