Enrique outburst good news for Liverpool or Arsenal

Jose Enrique has inched closer to a move away from Newcastle following a Twitter outburst over the club’s perceived lack of ambition.

The Spanish left-back only has a year remaining on his contract at St James’ Park and a combination of this fact and his solid performances last season have resulted in strong interest for his services this summer.

Liverpool have been linked with Enrique for virtually the whole summer with a new left-back one of their leading priorities, while Arsenal need a replacement for Gael Clichy, who recently left for Manchester City.

Enrique had been prepared to weigh up all of his options, which included signing a new deal at Newcastle, but with promises of a fantastic new deal yet to materialise, he has lost his temper on Twitter.

The 25-year-old criticised the club’s lack of ambition in letting players like Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan leave and remarked they would never finish in the top six while they did this and failed to re-invest any money gained.

Enrique added that to date any new contract he has been offered is on the same terms of his current deal, which is failing to appreciate his worth and importance to the club.

Attacking and defending are both important skills for a full-back in the modern game and Enrique proved his worth in both departments last season.

Not only did he assist four Premier League goals, but his positional awareness was also strong as Newcastle finished in 12th in the table.

These factors could prove valuable for both Liverpool and Arsenal this season, particularly as the consensus is that the battle is between the duo to fill the final vacancy in the top four alongside Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Arsenal are 4/7 in the Premier League odds to finish in the top four, with Liverpool 1/1 to achieve this feat after their summer of big spending.
