Djokovic earns quote of 7/4 to win the 2012 Wimbledon championship
Published:Minutes before the 2011 Wimbledon final started one punter placed £80k on Novak Djokovic winning the final at 5/4.
While that punter will certainly be celebrating tonight, the bookmakers are also celebrating following a fortnight in which the hugely supported trio of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray failed to lift the Wimbledon title.
Despite a few large bets on Djokovic as the start of the final approached, victory for the Serb was what every bookmaker in the country was cheering although they are already concerned about the potential dominance Djokovic is set to bring.
The world number one has been installed as the joint 7/4 favourite alongside Rafael Nadal for next year’s Wimbledon, but Djokovic is the outright favourite for the final Grand Slam tournament of the year at Flushing Meadows in September.
Having lost just one match all year, Djokovic is in the form of his life and his victory over Nadal in Sunday’s final means the Spaniard has failed to beat Djokovic in the five finals they’ve met in this year.
While Nadal earns a quote of 3/1 (second favorite) for the US Open, the hard courts are clear where Djokovic is at his best and in his current form, it’s difficult to see anyone beating him.
Andy Murray will consider the US Open as his best chance of winning a Grand Slam and the Brit earns a quote of 6/1 for the tournament with Roger Federer available at 9/2.
The resurgence of Juan Martin del Potro following a year of injuries sees the Argentine also available at 6/1 for the US Open with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the next best at 50/1.
Federer will be hoping to prove to all his critics that he remains a force in men’s tennis at Flushing Meadows, and the six-time Wimbledon champion is 4/1 to win a seventh title next year.
Murray is 6/1 to win next year’s Wimbledon with del Potro and Tsonga a long way back at 20/1.
Should Djokovic land the US Open title then that would be three out of four for the new star of men’s tennis, and on the basis of his form this year, Nadal has one very tough job getting back on level terms with the Serbian.
