Class prevails as Haye hints at return rather than retirement
Published:The late gamble on David Haye failed to pay-off as the Hayemaker lost the fight and his dignity on a miserable night in Hamburg.
His little toe was blamed but really Haye was never in the fight as Wladimir Klitschko stormed out of the blocks, using his jab to perfection to keep Haye at bay.
It may not have been pretty from Klitschko but it was certainly effective as the Ukranian used his size to his advantage, confirming the feelings from those who had previously fought Klitschko that Haye would be unable to cope with the Ukranian’s bulk.
Bar a late rally in the final round, Haye was outboxed and outclassed and his excuses straight after the fight would suggest Klitschko would be reluctant to hand the 30-year-old a rematch.
It’s 4/1 the two meet this year and it’s 14/1 that Haye beats Wladimir this year, but while talk of retirement seems to have been put to the side, it’s hard to see Haye remaining in boxing.
Punters can get 2/1 that Haye fights Vitali Klitschko in 2011 but Haye has had his excuses set up ever since he got into boxing and after being dominated by Wladimir, Haye has all the excuses needed to not step into the ring again.
Vitali does not need to fight Haye following Wladimir’s win, but a grudge match could be set-up following a week of trash-talk from Haye, but the manner of Wladimir’s win suggests Haye would struggle to cope with Vitali.
It’s 9/1 that Haye defeats Vitali this year, but my money is on Haye walking off in to the sunset pursue a career in acting, although judging by his acting skills over the past fortnight, Haye has some work to do in that area also.
