Boateng joins Bayern Munich to end Man City nightmare
Published:Bayern Munich are assembling a formidable-looking squad ahead of the new season, with Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng the latest to join the Bavarian giants.
German international Boateng has signed a four-year deal after the two clubs agreed a fee in the region of £10m, ending a difficult one-year stay at City for the 22-year-old where injuries prevented him from securing a regular place in the first team.
Boateng will link up with a Bayern side already strengthened significantly this summer, following the arrivals of Brazilian full-back Rafinha and young striker Nils Petersen, who scored 25 goals for Energie Cottbus last season.
Germany’s first choice goalkeeper and erstwhile Manchester United target Manuel Neuer has also made the move to Munich, bolstering a defence which already includes fellow German internationals Holder Badstuber and Philipp Lahm.
New manager Jupp Heynckes has been tasked with restoring pride and refilling the trophy cabinet at the Allianz Arena after a disappointing last campaign which saw Bayern finish third in the Bundesliga.
They are a very convincing 8/13 to wrestle the title back from reigning champions Borussia Dortmund, who face a difficult task in holding onto prized assets such as Mats Hummels and Shinji Kagawa.
While Bayern’s new signings are sure to prosper on a domestic level, there could also be value in backing them to shine in European competition as well.
Bayern are priced at 20/1 to win the Champions League and, taking into consideration their progress to the final in 2010, Heynckes’ men could be genuine contenders to claim a first European Cup triumph since 2001.
