Ambitious Swansea head to Barcelona in search for striker

Swansea seem to have the right idea in their quest to avoid Premier League relegation this season as they have approached Barcelona in their search for a new striker.

Jonathan Soriano is the man identified as having the tools to score for the Swans in their first Premier League season after he top scored for Barcelona B last season.

The 25-year-old netted 26 goals in the Spanish second tier last season and this scoring instinct has also led to interest from Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.

Swansea have already signed last season’s Championship top scorer Danny Graham for a club record £3.5m and signing his Spanish equivalent could prove a good bit of business.

Chairman Huw Jenkins said: “I will be meeting with the representative of a player that we feel will be perfect for Swansea City.

“He has the talent that would fit in to the style in which we believe in, and we are hopeful of him coming here. I hope we can agree a deal within the next few days.”

However, Swansea may also face competition from across Europe, with Champions League qualifiers Marseille and Udinese believed to be interested in the former Espanyol man.

After winning the play-offs last season, it is no surprise that Swansea are considered as the 4/7 favourites in the Premier League odds to be relegated this season.

Meanwhile, Swansea are known to play in an attacking style and proved strong at keeping clean sheets in the Championship last season, particularly at home.

Swansea’s odds are 5/4 to stay up this season, while fellow newcomers Norwich are 11/10 in this market.

In a bid to add some greater depth to their squad, Swansea are also targeting Middlesbrough’s Marvin Emnes, who enjoyed a successful loan spell last season before getting recalled to the Riverside Stadium prematurely before the deal was initially structured to end.
