15:15 Goodwood: Opinion Poll to land his own slice of fame and glory

Published:

The Thursday of Glorious Goodwood is rivalled only by Saturday in terms of people through the gates, and those who turn up for Ladies Day today will be eargerly awaiting the Goodwood Cup.

It’s the biggest prize on offer today with connections of the winner pocketing £56,710 and six of the contestants in the Ascot Gold Cup at the Royal Meeting are back for another crack today.

Fame And Glory may have proven his tag as the finest stamina horse in training but his absence today opens the field for another horse to step up to the plate and that horse can be Opinion Poll.

Trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni for the Godolphin stable and ridden by Frankie Dettori, Opinion Poll was second in the Ascot Gold Cup thanks to a brilliant ride from Mickael Barzalona and while he was three lengths off the winner, he was a long way clear of third place.

At 5/1 he rightly deserves his favouritism but there are a number of dangers in this 16-runner field and he won’t have it all his own way.

Tastahil (11/1) and Geordieland (25/1) both failed to finish in the Ascot Gold Cup but have proven ability over this trip and it will be interesting to see how they both cope today.

Of the two Geordieland will be the more popular winner but Tastahill is the bigger danger on the basis of his second behind Overturn (14/1) at Chester and his win at Newmarket in his last two starts.

It’s going to be a cracking race but Opinion Poll, under the guidance of Frankie Dettori, can land what will be a very popular victory on Ladies Day at Glorious Goodwood.
