14:45 Goodwood: Bookies to be weathered by a Noble Storm

Published:

The Goodwood Cup may be the biggest race of the day but the King George Stakes looks like becoming the race of the day as 11 top sprinters bid for a £48,000 prize.

A lot of luck is needed when finding the winner of this 5f sprint but you also need a horse that is bursting with speed and with horses like Kingsgate Native, Red Cadeux and Amour Propre in the field speed will be of the essence.

The withdrawal of Swiss Diva has had a big effect on the odds and the French mare would have had a big influence on the race, so punters are left with just 11 runners to decipher.

The trends aren’t strong but there are a few to work with and Borderlescott’s win last year was only the third winning favourite in 10 runnings although every winner since 2001 has started the race at 10/1 or shorter.

That rules out Beyond Desire, Humidor, Golden Destiny, Rain Delayed, Stone Of Folca and Breathless Kiss leaving punters with five to pick from.

Amour Propre, currently 4/1, looks likely to start the race as favourite but has been beaten in all of her last three starts by horses in this field and there are better alternatives.

Masamah fits a lot of the trends and following a win at York earlier in the month over four of today’s opposition, including the opposition, is strong form and it’s surprising not to see him challenging for favouritism.

Kingsgate Native (6/1) has proven to be a bit of an enigma since winning this race two years ago and his recent form, including two poor showings at Royal Ascot, leaves a lot to be desired.

Masamah is one to be feared but the pick is with Noble Storm (9/2) whose consistency at this level means he can shine in today’s company, despite it being stronger than anything he’s faced.
