14.35 Goodwood: Red Duke to nuke them in the Vintage Stakes

Published:

Keiren Fallon is yet to taste victory at this year’s Glorious Goodwood but the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes looks certain to be the Irishman’s first taste of success.

This seven furlong sprint has been won by some good horses in recent years and one of them, Rio De La Plata will line up in the Sussex Stakes today to take on Frankel and Canford Cliffs.

Fallon takes the reins on Red Duke today and John Quinn’s horse is heading the market alongside Chandlery at 11/4.

Nine of the last 10 winners of this race have come from the first four in the betting and seven of those came from the first two, but one stat even more impressive is that since 1980, 25 of the winners have come from the first two in the market.

With Red Duke and Chandlery vying for favouritism, it seems like a straight shoot-out between these two but neither Lethal Force not Rockinante can be ruled out.

The key race to study when looking for the winner of this race is the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month in which Red Duke won by a neck from Chandlery.

There wasn’t much to split them today and there’s unlikely to be much splitting the two today, but preference is for Red Duke who has the experience of beating his rival.

Rockinnante is an interesting prospect at 5/1 on the basis of his victory at Newmarket towards the end of June and he may be worth an each way flutter, but the trends for the favourites are too strong to ignore Red Duke.

At 11/4 Red Duke can return a very tidy profit and he would be out most confident nap of the day.
