The Safety Net – We pick Famous Name to help us win again
Published:Picking John Isner as yesterday’s Safety Net bet was always a slightly risky selection and his Wimbledon defeat to Nicolas Almagro ended our winning run, so we return to horse racing today to find our next victory.
Isner’s failures in tie-breaks proved his major undoing against Almagro and his defeat in four sets has seen our bank balance diminish to £170.50.
However, we are still showing good profit on our initial £50 and rather than trying to find a Wimbledon winner today, we turn our attention to horse racing at the Curragh.
Today represents the first day of a strong three-day festival and we are banking on Famous Name to secure victory in the Irish Daily Mail International Stakes.
Famous Name won the race in 2009 and is certainly at home in Group Three company, having won his last five races in the class.
Meanwhile, he steps back into weaker company having performed with credit when finishing third behind So You Think on his latest start, which was a Group One encounter.
The Curragh race only has five entrants and the two leading challengers to Famous Name have both been way below their best this season.
Elusive Pimpernel looked a smart two-year-old in 2009, but has struggled to regain his best form since injury.
He also flopped on his latest start, which was his first run over 1m2f.
Jan Vermeer is the other potential challenger, but he was extremely disappointing when looking to set the pace for So You Think at Royal Ascot recently.
Famous Name is 4/6 to win at the Curragh and to follow our rule of looking to win £20 each day, we will be staking £30 on Dermot Weld’s runner.
