The Safety Net – Slow and Steady wins the betting race

Published:

The Safety Net made its first foray into horse racing betting last Friday and were sticking with horse racing today as we search for the £20 profit.

The current Safety Net bank stands at £120.50 thanks to Points Of View’s victory at Market Rasen on Friday, and we’re going to need £45 of that to make our £20 today.

Mawsem is stepping back in class for the 3.00 Paxtons & Independent Twine for Bale Products Maiden Hurdle at Sedgefield today, and George Baker’s five-year-old will take all the beating.

Mawsem has made three starts this season in Class 3 and Class 4 races, and his second place at Newton Abbot last time out in a Class 4 novice hurdle would’ve been good enough to win this renewal today.

Twice a winner in his eight career starts, Mawsem is yet to register a victory over hurdles having registered both wins in National Hunt flat races as a four-year-old.

But this step-back in class is a huge positive for Geroge Baker’s gelding and with Andrew Tinkler on board, Mawsem should justify his short favouritism.

The danger looks to be Final Flyer but Mawsem is rated 9lbs higher than Alison Thorpe’s seven-year-old despite being dropped 3lbs by the handicapper following his second place at Newton Abbott, and off equal weights, Final Flyer shouldn’t worry odds-on backers.

He’s one of the best backed horses of the day and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his price shorten further, and so we’re staking out £45 at 4/9 now.

Current Status:
Bank: £120.50
Today’s stake: £45
Best case scenario: £140.50
Worst case scenario: £75.50
