The Safety Net – Slow and steady wins the betting race

Published:

It’s a difficult lark this gambling game but over the next 365 days we’re going to attempt to turn £50 into an ISA busting £7,300.

They say slow and steady wins the race and we’re on our hands and knees in the office crawling towards the target with a strategy that can reap dividends.

We’ve heard stories of greed and excess, we’ve seen grown men shed tears over near misses, but we’re confident we can finally beat the bookie.

Be prepared for seriously short odds – there will be no 50/1 winners on this blog – as we take the ruthless approach to making money.

Each day we’re going to target a return of £20 – the only stipulation is that all of our editors have to agree on the bet – and you can follow our daily diary of each and every bet right here on News.Ladbrokes.

Today is day one of the Safety Net challenge and we’re going with Maria Sharapova to destroy Andrea Petkovic in straight sets.

At 5/4 for Sharapova to win 2-0, we’re staking £18 to return £20.50, leaving us with a budget of £32 but a potential budget for tomorrow of £70.50.

In summary, both players are in fine clay court form having entered the French Open with a win, they have both one victory to their name against each other this year and we’re struggling to split the pair.

But Sharapova is the form player in womens tennis at the moment and with three Grand Slam victories to her name, she can run the rule over Petkovic.

At 5/4 we’re getting plenty of value with Sharapova who can ease into the semi-finals and a potential match with French Open favourite Victoria Azarenka.

Current status:
Bank: £50
Today’s stake: £18
Potential win: £20.50
Best case scenario: £70.50
Worst case scenario: £32
