Spurs at front of hunt for Premier League bound Forlan

Atletico Madrid are preparing to lose both of their chief strikers ahead of the start of the new season after deciding that the time is right for Diego Forlan to leave the club.

Sergio Aguero was on course to leave the Vicente Calderon for local rivals Real Madrid and although this now seems unlikely to materialise, it is not expected that the Argentine will return to Atletico.

Despite this, the La Liga club are also prepared to sell Forlan and because of their desire to get him off their books quickly, the Uruguayan will be available for a cut-price fee.

After winning the Golden Boot at last summer’s World Cup, Forlan’s stock was incredibly high and there were rumours that offers of £20m were made to sign him.

However, it is believed that Atletico Madrid are prepared to sell him for a third of this price.

Galatasaray are believed to have already made an offer for Forlan, but the 32-year-old is thought to be against a move to Turkey, particularly as the club are unable to offer European football.

A return to the Premier League is the more desired option, with Tottenham and Newcastle known to be two of his admirers.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo said: “Diego will decide what happens, but it looks like his first choice will be England.”

White Hart Lane is the more likely destination for Forlan, particularly as Tottenham are known to be chasing a new striker and Harry Redknapp is never one to turn down a bargain when he sees one.

Tottenham will be keen to play Champions League football again soon and the signing of Forlan could be significant if they are to break back into the Premier League top four.

It is 11/4 in the Premier League odds that Tottenham finish in the top this season.
