Serena the Wimbledon banker now seedings have been announced
Published:Serena Williams has been handed some good fortune by the All England Club today ahead of her Wimbledon challenge next week.
Having not played since winning Wimbledon last year, Serena has slipped from the world number one spot to 25th in the world rankings.
But the 13-time Grand Slam winner has been given a reprieve by the All England Club seeding her eight, meaning she won’t face any of the leading contenders until at least the quarter-finals.
The announcements of the seeds for Wimbledon have seen Serena’s Wimbledon odds cut into 4/1 and she now shares favouritism with Maria Sharapova who is seeded sixth.
All of the seedings for Wimbledon in both the men’s and women’s draws follow the ATP & WTA rankings bar the two Williams sisters with Venus seeded 24 despite being the world’s 33rd best player.
There’s no doubting the quality of the two Williams sisters but their fellow professionals may feel that they have been favoured by the All England Club ahead of next week’s Grand Slam.
Serena played her first match in over a year on Tuesday when beating Tsvetana Pironkova despite losing the first set 6-1 at Eastbourne, and the American will be hoping for a lot of game time at Eastbourne before she takes to the courts of Wimbledon next week.
A win at Eastbourne would see her Wimbledon odds cut further but even if she doesn’t manage to triumph this week, she look’s the pick of the Wimbledon betting.
Serena wouldn’t be back on court if she wasn’t fit enough and with Kim Clijsters struggling with injury, it’s difficult to see any of the top seeds, bar a in-form Sharapova, compete with the power of Serena.
The game time is needed this week which doesn’t make her a banker at Eastbourne, but the 4/1 for Wimbledon seems to good to be true.
