McIlroy 7/1 for Open success after blowing away US Open field
Published:Rory McIlroy put his capitulation at the Masters well and truly behind him yesterday with a stunning final round performance that secured him the US Open title.
McIlroy broke eight records over the course of the four-day US Open tournament, but perhaps the most significant one was that McIlroy became the youngest player to win the US Open since Bobby Jones in 1923.
Comparisons with Tiger Woods are inevitable but we’ll try to stay well clear until McIlroy manages a second Major, but should he do so in next month’s Open at Royal St. Georges we’ll be waxing lyrical about the precocious talent.
Actually, forget that, we’ll wax lyrical about him now as we truly believe McIlroy will dominate the Open as he did the US Open and we are looking at the next dominant force in golf.
Following his success at Congressional yesterday, McIlroy has been installed as the 7/1 favourite in the Open betting, well clear of Lee Westwood who is priced up at 10/1.
For those of you who aren’t so sure, just listen to this for a statistic – In McIlroy’s last 16 Major tournament rounds he has shot under par in 13 of them.
McIlroy’s three-day domination of the Masters wasn’t a fluke, it had been on the cards since the Northern Irishman tied for third in the 2009 US PGA Championship.
It’s obvious from McIlroy’s performance yesterday that the Ulsterman has learnt an awful lot from his collapse in the final round of the Masters and with Tiger struggling to find his best form, McIlroy can go on to dominate the final two Majors of the year.
His last 16 Major tournament rounds suggest he’s capable of great things and the three rounds in which he’s failed to break par, he collapsed in two and parred the other.
If McIlroy has extinguished the collapse from his game and on the basis of last week’s performance he has, the R&A can package up the claret jug and express delivery it over to Holywood.
