Liverpool newcomer unafraid of hyping their title prospects
Published:This is Luis Suarez’s first pre-season as a Liverpool player so he can be forgiven for not being aware that his team-mates now try to avoid declarations that this could be their year, having seen such optimism prove misguided in recent campaigns.
The Uruguayan forward, who has impressed since arriving at Anfield in January, has aspirations of that the Reds will compete for the title next season and though odds of 10/1 indicate that top spot is unlikely in 2011-12, he is feeling confident.
Suarez said: “I think the form we have shown over the second half of the season bodes well. We’ve been playing well and I think we’ve been getting into the type of form that we know we’ll have to keep up for a whole season if we want to be title contenders.
“This is something we’re optimistic about for next season and if we can hit the ground running and maintain the good form then I think we’ve got a good chance of doing well.”
The former Ajax man’s ambition is clearly shared by Kenny Dalglish and the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group, who have already made one big-money signing this summer in the form of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson, with several more expected.
Villarreal winger Santi Cazorla is the latest name to be linked with a move to Merseyside after a supposed recommendation to Dalglish from former Yellow Submarine colleague and fellow Spanish international Pepe Reina.
If the newspapers are to be believed, Dalglish has the longest shortlist of any manager in the world right now with Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Charlie Adam, Scott Parker, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Eljero Elia, Stewart Downing and Connor Wickham among the many players rumoured to be in his sights.
