Liverpool may sell Meireles to fund further midfield transfer targets

With Jordan Henderson having already arrived at Liverpool in recent weeks and Charlie Adam still a known target, Kenny Dalglish may need to get rid of some of his current crop of midfielders and this includes Raul Meireles.

Liverpool are certainly not short on current midfield options, with Steven Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Meireles, Jay Spearing, Alberto Aquilani, Christian Poulsen and Jonjo Shelvey all battling for three spots.

Poulsen and Aquilani will definitely be allowed to leave Anfield, although Liverpool will want to recoup much of the £17m they paid Roma for the latter, but this may prove easier said than done.

The fact that they be forced to retain Aquilani could mean that Meireles is deemed surplus to requirements.

Meireles has become a bit of a hero among the Liverpool fans in the ten months he has been at the club and a bit of a backlash may take place from the supporters should he be sold.

Juventus are thought to have lodged an interest in the Portuguese midfielder and reports have suggested that the Italian giants are prepared to include Felipe Melo in any such deal as a makeweight.

Liverpool paid £10.5m for Meireles and would be happy to sell him to Juventus for £13m.

Whether Liverpool are interested in Melo is unknown, but they are remain keen admirers of Adam and £8m could be enough to secure his services from Blackpool.

The chief aim for Liverpool this season is to regain their position in the Champions League after finishing just sixth in the Premier League in the last campaign.

It is 1/1 in the Premier League odds that Liverpool finish in the top four this season, while it is 10/1 that they make the necessary improvement to win the title.
