De Gea 12/1 to win more Premier League titles than Schmeichel

Only the formalities are now keeping David De Gea from signing for Manchester United and odds are already available relating to both the short and long-term success of the Spanish goalkeeper in the Premier League.

An £18.3m deal has been agreed by both Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, while the 20-year-old has also had a medical at Old Trafford.

For a goalkeeper so young, De Gea certainly has big boots to fill as he attempts to follow in the footsteps of legends including Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Sar.

He is sure to be given an immediate chance to prove his credentials on the opening day of the Premier League season away at West Brom, unless he is ruled out by injury.

It is 1/6 in the Premier League odds that De Gea does start in goal against West Brom, while it is 7/2 that Sir Alex Ferguson selects another one of the goalkeepers from his squad.

Meanwhile, an 11/10 double is also available that De Gea is picked and goes on to keep a clean sheet in his first Premier League game.

Schmeichel won five Premier League titles as Manchester United goalkeeper, with Van Der Sar claiming four before deciding to retire at the end of last season.

In the long term Spanish under-21 goalkeeper De Gea will have the opportunity to better these achievements and continue the success of Manchester United, most notably in the past 20 years.

De Gea is 12/1 to win a minimum of six Premier League titles and better the number achieved by Schmeichel.

With De Gea having only just helped Spain win the European under-21 Championship he is expected to enjoy a short break before joining Manchester United, but will join up with the squad in time to take part of the pre-season tour in the USA, which begins on July 11th.
